Are these considered "food" or "other"? Almost left a pouch (in it's cardboard) from an MRE last weekend, but didn't. It's food, yes, but it's in a retort pouch. Is it safe to leave, or what?

Just curious. (I've been to a cache already when I've wished there was something in it I could eat.)

I think generally speaking its not a good idea to put food items in a cache. They can leak, they can attract animals, and some would be leary of eating something they found.

In theory, though, you'd think a sealed food container like the MRE in an ammo can should be fine. In one Scandinavian country (Denmark?) it's tradition to put a can of kippers in a cache. I did that at the "Lunch at the Waterfall" cache and the cache disappeared soon after that. Coincidence?

I agree with erik's views on this. I personally wouldn't trade, take or eat ANY kind of foodstuffs found in caches. I have taken some out of caches and thrown it away, along with cigarettes, lighters, condoms and a even a 'joint' - can you believe what some people will put in caches? Guess I've heard too many stories about tainted Halloween candy. Remember when we used to take our 'goodies' to the Hospital and have it X-Rayed?

What has this to do with MRE's?. I would be afraid some animal might think they are food, tear open the cache and eat one. Then PETA would be after us.

In my opinion, MRE's are considered foodstuffs. I personally wouldn't take/trade them. And like I said... it's just my 2 cents worth.

The original MRE's were pretty bad, in truth the current ones can almost be considered as food.
