I always try to leave the cache and area better than I found it, sadly not all cachers share this thinking...

I have done a lot of archiving over the years as well. And I've decided to just archive any that come up with problems in the future. I don't keep them out there for me, so if others don't care about them... then it's not worth me keeping them going.
Sadly You are so right that not all cacher's share this thinking. But, Hopefully those that do stick around for a while will get the message. When these same "irresponsible" cachers can't find the caches to fill the holes in their challenge grids and they start bitching that the there isn't anything close that will work (and they will)... I guarantee I will be at the front of the line with a huge smile on my face saying "You reap what you sew!"

I have jumped in to save many a cache that is now considered "old" and would have been lost (archived). Glorious Warrior, Desoto Between the falls, The Short bus, Desoto Falls, Emordilap and Beaver Cache.... Just to name a few.
I wanted to make sure others got to experience that same journey, but if I hadn't have stepped in... those caches would be gone.
Yes, I've stepped up and even replaced/did maintenance on Micros... but those where Back in the day (2006). Since I don't normally do micros I haven't lately. Lucky for me that one of the micros I did help the Cache/owner with netted me a really great friend... She and I have been buds ever since.

I didn't do it for any other reasons other than - I enjoyed the journey of each one and I saw the importance of preserving some Geocaching history. And I wanted others to be able to experience it too! I wish more cachers did as well.

Unfortunately we can't control the attitude of others. Life would be a heck of a lot nicer if we could. I do wish that everyone could be happy just helping out - even if no one knows you did.

Annie, isn't your desire to help geocaching and the geocaching community in general one of the reasons you became part of the SC? I can imagine that at times you feel like you are fighting a losing battle - trying to get cachers to take care of the finds and the environment itself. I think I have never directly said thank you. Well, honey - thank you. I appreciate the work you did (and are doing) for the GGA, and I am sorry for the stress you had to put up with in that position.

Side note - I do like that my kid sees some of the crap that people have left in the wooded areas all around - not cachers, just irresponsible people. She knows full well how UNACCEPTABLE that is, and what will happen to her little behind if I ever find out she dumped trash. I consider this just one of the side benefits of caching. I like that she knows that putting on gloves and picking up a bag of trash is part of it.

Hey, have you all seen the CITO challenge? It is only for 10 pieces of trash - anyone can haul out 10 pieces! I have not yet remembered to take a picture, I just want to get the bag to a trash can and not stop for a Kodak Moment!

Nope. I did it for the money, the prestige and the rock-n-roll Lifestyle.
Seriously... Someday I'll tell ya Why I did, when we are on the trail - it will either make the trip longer or it will kill some time. I'm sure it will amuse you.

I don't do any of the things I do for thank-yous (though I did appreciate yours). I do it because when I started caching - that's what it was all about. That's "Old School" caching.

I stopped trying to teach people a long time ago. I just do what I want - like the Honey Badger. I try to cache by example (when I cache)... Just as you do with your daughter. Because I learned after beating my head against the wall and hanging out with phat.bak's little budda buddy... that I can only worry about the things that I can control. When it comes to Geocaching... I can only control the path that I take and the way I cache.

If people want to follow... than so be it.
If not... then they get the pleasure of listening to me complain about it.
