This is always been a pet peeve of mine. Yesterday, I was reviewing a local cache and found an entry from a Florida cacher who was passing through the area. The cacher commented that of the five caches found that day, all were littered with trash. I have done those fives caches and I have to agree. They were trash pits when we found them. I am not talking about the occasional soda bottle and paper litter, which we usually pick up. I am talking about trash bag (s) amount of filth. This is a shame. It is a shame that Georgians created the mess and more so that a geocacher brings us to it. I have cached in 17 other states and three countries. Although a small percentage of my caches, it is probably 200+ caches. I cannot recall one being a trash cache. As a matter of fact, I went out to nine today and one was a trash cache (not one of my finds fortunately). This one was next to a drug store and it was littered with prescription vials, paper, cans, trash and even used bandages. I recall several years ago finding a cache at the end of a dead end street with a vacant lot. The locals used the lot as their trash dump. The owner referenced in the description that he thought this area needed a cache! What is disappointing is that that in almost every case, there was a better spot for the cache relatively close. Fellow Georgia Geocachers, let’s not get a reputation. Please think through your cache spot location. If there are visible dangers, you are obligated to warn your fellow geocachers. The reviewers require clarifications if there is a known safety issue (e.g. railroad tracks). Maybe, this also applies to caches located in, near or on hazardous waste.

The nastiest one I can remember is called "Floating Restroom Alternative". GC1VBVP. It's on an island in Lake Keowee in SC. This cache hider brought me to the most disgusting place I think I've ever been. Never seen anything like it before or since. Hey, at least maybe it makes GA trash caches not look so bad. I love the ones that have "this area is in dire need of CITO" right in the description. WakeboardLanier

What I don't understand is that when a "certain size" cache is placed by a stinky nasty dumpster - people actually put in their log ... TFTC! OK maybe phat.bak doesn't but pretty much everyone else does. It isn't all of the cache hider's fault. The blame needs to be shared with those who condone the placement by
In general, Cache hunters are more concerned with their find count then the journey! So if they generally don't care, why should the hiders care where they put the cache? And from what you're saying... it sounds like they don't. ----------------------- Quality Over Quantity!!! -----------------------

Don't get me started on "trash caches". The one that sticks out the most for me since moving to the Gainsville area is one that is only a couple of miles from my home. Little River Hatch cache. In fact I was there just this past weekend showing a couple of new cachers this cache. Not a very pretty site for sure. I thought it was the most trashed area I have ever been to and is even worse than when I found it myself last year. You could pull literally 'TONS" of trash out of that area and there was even trash and chairs and couches on the shoreline now that the water level is down. Absolutely discusting the things that people can do to an area. I would graciously suggest a CITO for this area but you would literally need numerous dump trucks to pull everything out of there. Anyone up for this? It would take a full day and numerous trucks to pull this off and it has been CITO'ed before from some of the older logs and photos. I say the owner really needs to archive this cache to make sure no one is injured in finding this one.

I hate trashy areas as much as the next person, but some had caches there to promote CITO. Little River Hatch is one of those. It was placed by a USACE ranger, and I remember spending the day there CITOing out a large truckload of trash. We even got a mattress out of there. It later blew out of the truck onto the interstate, but that's a different story. Anyway, once upon a time we had that place nicely cleaned up. Too bad the trash dumpers and fisherslobs cause more trash than our CITO can keep up with. The USACE also doesn't have the personnel to police the area. Bummer. ~erik~
