Came across a cache that some jerk had taken the box from. They had left all the stuff in the hiding spot but took the box! Most of the stuff was destroyed! The log was toast.

So, I had the family grab everything we could find. Bagged it up and brought it home. Then we went to the cache's site and logged what we did. I didn't email the owner directly. But I did ask him to email me. I think maybe I should have emailed him.

But all in all did I do right or have I committed some major newbie error?

Sounds like a good way to handle it. You trashed out the remnants, which is good. You salvaged what was left, which is good if the owner wants to resurrect the cache.

If the owner doesn't respond to your e-mail and/or disable or archive the listing let me know. We don't want people tearing up the environment looking for something that's gone.
