Kayak Cache ( GC2EB8), which I hid 6 years ago is now temporarily disabled. I placed this cache to showcase the Canoeing venue used at the Olympics when they were here, as the description states. Over the years, more and more cachers have found an overland route to access it, and very few actually see the venue. Flaming Mad
I am temporarily disabling it until I can see if a new spot can be found to elminate the land option. I don't want to 'kill it', just bring it back to what it once was.

The moral of this story is don't tell about your back door in your logs. Smile

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but this is a related topic.

We've been asked to temporarily disable all caches on islands on Lake Lanier until after December 30th. A special hunt is taking place on islands (and what used to be islands before the lake dried up) and some 60 hunters will be in attendance. For our safety we've been asked to please comply with the request. This will be an archery deer hunt conducted as a test to see if it's an effective way to cull the herd.

The US Army Corps of Engineers has been great to work with at Lanier, and their geocaching policy has been adopted nationwide by the Corps for areas under their jurisdiction.

Please help ensure we comply with their wishes, and let me know if I missed any of the island caches that should be temporarily disabled.

Thanks!

~erik~

Allen, only on Lake Lanier islands, or what were islands before the drought. Sixty hunters will be out there over a two week period, so for safety's sake we've been asked to not hunt the caches during that period. Temporarily disabling seemed to be the best way to get the message out.

I had not heard about this until I saw that the caches were disabled.

As a frequent boater, marina resident, and user of the islands I am glad to hear about it. I don't think I would have heard about it any other way.

Weather permitting, I am planning on going to my usual island the week of Christmas.

I will use extreme caution if we decide to go now.

I have three caches out there and they're all on Lake Lanier islands. It seemed very odd that ~eric~ temporarily disabled every island cache but mine. Maybe the USACE made "my" islands off limits during the hunt? What respect! But doubtful. I'll disable mine for the rest of the year.

I'm an avid bowhunter and am very disappointed I didn't know about this special hunt! My own fault though since it was mentioned in a small paragraph in the back of this season's regs. Next year I'm going after that nice buck I spooked at Pine Torch Place!! (If there is a next year and if I'm lucky enough to get drawn)

I must have missed yours. Thanks for disabling it. Yeah, the hunters were chosen through a lottery of some sort. Maybe next year will be your year...
