Why do well meaning, intelligent people involved in various hobbies publish personal information on Forums and Newsletters? What better place would a potential adversary be able to anonymously glean intelligence on a victim. Someone writes, “We are going out of town this next weekend and we are carrying the dog with us in our Lincoln Navigator…..etc.” or how about, “I do not carry a gun while hiking but always carry a whistle and pepper spray in my backpack.”. A potential assailant can put together a complete history of frequent posters habits, personality, ability to self defend and plan accordingly from the numerous posts. I believe Geocachers are particularly vulnerable in that if they publish their desire to find a certain cache, their exact position will be known and, if they are verbose enough, will make the approximate ETA known. An attack could be easily planned knowing that along with other information. You can do what you want, but I would never post in a public forum any information about plans or what means of self-defense I use.

Oh, good grief! Roll Eyes It's not like I announce to the world when I'm leaving my house and my destination. I simply told people what I do to try to remain safe while out hiking. I think it's a HUGE stretch to imagine that someone could stalk me with that information.

We are a trusting society. I expect that what is published on forums such as ours puts us less at risk than other common practices. I know prosecutors who just cringe at the information that people will hang on the back of their cars about their children. Bumper stickers telling school names, church names, activities that the children participate in and of course that clinger on the window with the child's name and telling that they are a cheerleader, soccor player, softball player, ect. at whatever school. This information is not hidden on some forum but paraded all over town.

Nah, low-life scumbags don't think that much. They are creatures of opportunity, like rats. Besides, my alarm system and trained killer attack dog will keep my house safe. And I am a dead shot with the .44 magnum I carry everywhere, even in the shower. So why worry? Except the holster straps make it hard to wash my back.

... and let it be known that I now carry a .44 mag (couldn't afford the nickelplate, tho) and have a Taser as backup (both readily available).
And if anyone gets past that I'll just put an ol' fashion south Loozianna A$$-whupping on whomever wants to 'throwdown'.
And did I mention that I am 'certifiably' NUTZ!?

Catch-22 .... I see the rationale of Tat's post, but I also see the point that Nasty is trying to make. You never know when posted info is being garnered. I do try to limit personal info that I post.

none of this junk works.
I have very loose lips.
I do not pack fire arms.
I let the world know where I am.
I put all my travels on the internet.
I go way back in the back country.
Still I can not get molested.
I just stood on a mountain this week a hooping
and hollowing here I am, come on a take me.
Nothing! Where are all the lady hermits?

I've been known to throw a Delta Bat-Wing into the air on occasion. Never had much luck with the Box Kites, tho.

I have a Parafoil kite I bought in SF 20 years ago. It is a great kite, no sticks to break and packs into a small tube.

That sound like a great event apeter! Oak Hill in Piedmont Park is one of the premier kite-flying venues in the metro area. But how do you plan for the day when the wind will be high enough?
As for this threads topic, we should always let someone know where we are headed and when we expect to be back especially if we go solo.
When I'm out hunkering around in the woods alone I ususally feel like the one you've been warned to protect yourself against.
But I'm am packing.

..Oh, you meant firearms...
