Recovering Geocacher![]() |
The November 2005 GGA meeting was held at the Coastal Georgia Center in downtown Savannah. Johann Panholz reserved the meeting space and served as master of ceremonies. There were 32 present, which included a small contingent of geocachers from across the Savannah River representing South Carolina.
John/Johann had a well prepared PowerPoint presentation on "Leave No Trace" to start the meeting, and to be sure we understood the doctrine of low impact geocaching. Low impact geocaching is of course the opposite of "Brute Force Geocaching", as initially practiced by our presenter. Next on the agenda, representing your GGA Steering Committee, was mtn-man. Greg hit upon the basics of the GGA, then went into detail on an offshoot of geocaching - the collecting of GeoCoins. Greg had brought his collection, and kindly allowed the assembled multitudes to examine them, and log those that had tracking numbers. Mtn-man was followed by Waterbaron, who detailed the history of the controversy surrounding caches in South Carolina cemeteries, and the political hay made of this by those who oppose our sport. Regardless of the fairness of the tactics of the opposition, there were some things to be learned from the experience: Don't put caches where people might possibly take offense, and be prudent in what's written in your log if you find a cache in or near a cemetery. Don't bushwack, get permission, and carry copies of the fine Geocaching University Info Sheet describing how geocaching works. We had plenty of time for socializing, then the regular highlight of our meetings - the famous raffle. Mr. Panholz's lovely daughter drew the numbers, and hopefully those who deserved a goodie got one. John ended the meeting with a puzzle cache using Suduko - a puzzle similar in appearance to a crossword puzzle, but using numbers. Of course the fact that the raffle numbers were being called out at the same time your humble scribe tried to solve the number puzzle made the whole exercise a dismal failure for him. However, some were able to multitask, and later went out to find the nearby cache. Thanks to our Savannah hosts a good time was had by all. For those of us who drove from the Atlanta area it was well worth the trip, and we look forward to doing it again. |
