August 2008 GGA Meeting Notes THE MEETING - The August 2008 Georgia Geocachers Association meeting took place in Little Mulberry Park in Auburn, GA. It was a beautiful day under the large pavilion to witness the surrounding activity and to have a meeting and learning program. THE PROGRAM – Over the years, this particular GGA meeting has been dubbed the ‘Snake Show’, because we get educated about…snakes. The meeting started with the introduction of the speaker Dr. Mark Patterson by ~erik~. Dr. Mark, as we’ve come to know him over the years, gave another wonderful presentation on the world of the snake. He tells us that snakes are our friend and helps to keep a zillion rodents under population control and that harming a snake can upset that balance lending us to a rodent invasion into our homes. Dr. Mark had a variety of snake species he brought around for folks to see and touch up close while educating us in his usual wit and funny ways. He also explained about what to do and what not to do on our encounters with these creatures. We even learned about using the 'Cloaca’ for determining the animal’s gender. However, getting that close to try is not advised. After his presentation, the Steering Committee presented Dr. Mark with the GGA’s ‘FRIEND OF GEOCACHING' Award. http://img.geocaching.com/cache/log/ec4a3c9c-52f8-480a-96c4-c1b01c388b2d.jpg This plaque was just a small token of appreciation from the GGA thanking Dr. Mark for his support and understanding of our Geocaching needs. ATTENDENCE - We added 21 new members under 19 geonicks making the total number of folks in attendance 89. That was a good show of support for our speaker. Thanks to everyone for coming out.
