Geocacher |
The March 2006 meeting was held on March 11th 10 miles west of Cordele at the Georgia Veterans State Park at scenic Lake Blackshear.
REHass reserved the meeting space and lined up the speaker for the day – Mike Goodwin, the park overseer. There were approximately 61 in attendance – 19 of these were new members from south Georgia. Tarvol opened the meeting and welcomed all the new members. Then REHass introduced the speaker – Mike Goodwin. Mike’s presentation included a history of the park and surrounding area and the park’s policy toward geocaching. The park was established after WWII as a memorial to veterans. It originally had 1,200 acres but is now at 1,300+ and includes outdoor exhibits featuring aircraft, armored vehicles, and guns from WWI to the Vietnam war and a museum with items from the Revolutionary War to the 1st Gulf War. The park also offers other amenities such as radio control model airplane fields, nature trails, a swimming beach and a golf course. Nearby attractions include the Sam Shortline Excursion Train, the Museum of Aviation at Warner Robins, Plains (home of Jimmy Carter), and Andersonville. Then Mike talked about the state parks’ policy toward geocaching and handed out some information related to placing caches in parks. Next mtn-man spoke briefly about the role of the GGA and about placing caches in state parks. Then we broke for some time to socialize after which we ended the meeting with the raffle of numerous donated items, including a beautiful hiking stick and a couple of well stocked ammo boxes. The next GGA meeting will be our annual CITO event on April 22 at Tribble Mill Park. |
