June 2007 GGA Meeting Notes
The June 2007 meeting was the GGA’s 6th anniversary meeting. It was six years ago that the first meeting was held, and assuming a monthly get-together since then this would have been number 72. Time sure does fly when you’re having fun, and this meeting was truly a fun one. The attendance roster included 56 old members signing in under 47 geonicks, and 12 new members under 12 geonicks. We had 68 humans and 7 dogs in attendance. The meeting was organized by Bad Dawg 83 and Johnnie, and held in Gatewood Park on the shores of Lake Alatoona. It was a nice cool, clear day, and we had a very nice pavilion in the park. The smart participants got there early, as BD83 and Johnnie grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Others brought side dishes, and we even had great homemade ice cream complements of Barbara of the Smiling in Acworth Team. At 2 pm Sam of Smiling in Acworth orchestrated the release of dozens of white doves, most released individually by geocachers in memory of departed loved ones. It was a very dramatic and touching event. It was also pretty cool to watch the birds circle above us two or three times before the flock headed for home. It was almost as if they had GPS receivers waiting to get a satellite lock to tell them which way to go. The meeting was largely one of fellowship and fun, but in addition to the dove release there were a few organized activities. Mertat, who could not join us at the meeting, had initiated the collection of anecdotes about her fellow geocachers, and Mtn-man as master of ceremonies, read out these little stories as we tried to guess who they pertained to. It was a lot of fun. Thanks largely to the behind the scenes efforts of Atlanta Gal we were able to introduce our new 6th anniversary GGA geocoin at the event, and those who had not made purchases online were able to snag a new geocoin at the meeting. There was quite a bit of geocoin trading at the event, and even a nearby cache to hunt that was published just that morning. Photos of the event, and the logs of those who were lucky enough to make it can be read here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=...a7ca5&log=y&decrypt= Our next meeting will be held July 14th in middle Georgia.
