Geocacher |
A few cachers set up a geocaching information booth at Oxbow's Insectival today. This was there 8th annual event. There were live water and land bugs under microscopes. 3-D glasses were used to view magnified bug images. We learn about honeybees from local beekeepers. Kids made bug and spider crafts to take home. There were even insect lollipops and chocolate-covered crickets! There were roach racing and cricket-spitting contests for the brave!
Even with a little rain, gnats, and the heat folks came out to enjoy the event. We got lucky... we were in between the Forestry table and a butterfly display table. YEAH... No hissing roaches. Oh but I did make the mistake of passing by the roach table. I guess I looked interested and the man stopped me to tell me about all the different types of roaches in Georgia. Did you know there are 7 different types of roaches in our state and one happens to be green? Well now you do! I know... I didn't really care to know either. I would say between 50 to 60 people visited our table. From that we had 29 people that seriously inquired about geocaching. A few were new cachers in the area that didn't know about our group nor the GGA. Ron (Cheefy) and Dreamland (Vic) were there to help explain geocaching. They were naturals and did a great job! Thanks so much for the help. In between talking with folks we all got a chance to enjoy the event and have some lunch. Oxbow provided sub sandwiches, chips, drinks and fruit to all the volunteers. Dreamland now holds the geocacher's record for "Cricket Spitting", 16' 1.5". Way to go!!! He just couldn't resist all the fun and the chance to support Oxbow. The roach races were funny. The kids were having a blast. I know John Wayne the roach won 1st place on the first race but I can't remember the rest of the winners. This was a great little event. I will be sure to let everyone know prior to the event next year. You can come down to Columbus and join in the festivities. Maybe see how far you can spit a cricket or two... Theresa TGBear |
