Hey Cymbaline (or others)!

We have a 120 now and our little Etrex and have been looking at the 130...Is it worth the money?

Sorry for the delay in respoding..

If you have the 120, you may not notice as many differences as I did when I moved from the 110.

Major features/differences for me:
- 24MB of RAM (for basemaps, etc)
- Built-in 7-channel NOAA radio w/alert features.
- Built-in electronic compass

And a couple of minor things I'm not remembering at the moment. Overall, it's still a Rino. For you, you'd get to add more basemaps with the additional 16MB RAM over the 120, and I've actually used the weather radio quite a few times given the short time that I've owned it. The compass I've mostly turned off - I use the Silva I carry in my pocket most often, as I've not gotten used to how it spins around and the like, but would be a cool thing to have if I forget the Silva.

In short: If I hadn't of nuked the 110 in Lanier, I may not have gotten the 130. Having lost the 110, I'm more than satisfied with the 130 - and I haven't even uploaded CitySelect basemaps to it yet.

My recommendation to you - if you're not maxed out on the memory on your 120, or don't care about NOAA, and have a good hand-held compass, hold off on getting the 130 for now. I'll double-check additional features that I'm forgetting shortly and post them as well - espeically if I'm forgetting something major.

Jason

Thanks Jason!

We still have plenty of memory left and like you I am partial to my "old fashioned" compass. the weather radio is the most intriguing part for me...

Thanks Again!

The term "lost" is subjective. He was demonstrating the *float* feature as we all watched it sink to the bottom of the lake. It, like the Titanic, took on a bunch of water. It's now dead and waiting to be mailed back to Garmin.

Hey, it was the perfect excuse to not only buy the new 130, but also get another item on his GPS wish list Smile

Minor follow-up:

- Projecting waypoints based on compass bearing "takes"; pretty cool, but if I'm that lost I'll need topo maps in my pocket and a slightly more expensive hand-held compass to correct myself. Having said that, this is a pretty cool feature.

- Altimeter: Ok, this is pretty cool. can project out where you've been vs. where you're at in regards to terrain altitude. I like it a lot.

Ok, a few more "PRO"'s it is. It's a solid unit, gets good reads/feeds most of the time.

I still wouldn't chunk a 110 or a 120 for it.
