Have Rino, Will Travel |
I got a Rino 130 just before Christmas, so now we have a 120, a 130 and the little yellow etrex.
I am trying to figure out if it will automap a route from waypoint to waypoint,or if the routes have to be manually configured. Jason, or others, can you help? |

Sorry! Fell asleep at the wheel on this one!
No, the Rino family - the 130 included - will not do autonav functions. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the memory "limitations" of the 130, though you *could* squeeze in some decent areas for autonav in 32MB. Perhaps the future, super version 140CS* will do it, but garmin isn't speaking on it. The autonav thing was what was causing me so much grief last year after my lake-dipping incident, and why I ended up with both the 60CS and the Rino 130. As it is, the 60CS rarely leaves the truck and the Rino is most often on my hip/pack strap. * - Fictional product that exists only in my mind, functional combination of the 60CS and the Rino 130, all in one unit. Excepting color and autonav, they're idential in other functions. |

I do not have a 130 but with my Vista I can only Auto-route using the Mapsource software on my PC then download it into the Vista.
I have to build point by point waypoints on the Vista if I do not use the PC download It's a matter of degrees |

The autonav is helpful when driving in other states, but to be honest, I don't have it loaded in my 76C. I have seen the 60CS be inaccurate a lot... thinking roads are there that are not. So I just load tons of maps in there and kind of eyeball it. Of course I'm not driving when I do this either. I really don't see the point of the rhino anyway... the radio mic on it stinks. And if that's the only bonus feature, I don't see why someone just doesn't buy a pair of FRS radios and get a different GPS model.

I admit that the radio isn't the greatest, but I guess you just kind of get real attached to these things!
I've been carrying the 130 AND the 120 both with me in the Jeep, but I've only loaded full maps on the 120. Hey, at least the littlest SpiderWebb gets the etrex all to himself now! |

Sorry SW, my question was more retorical. It wasn't meant to be answered or to offend. I just look at the Garmin models, their average pricing and wonder why this model exists. Just ignore me

Well, the FRS in the Rino actually does a couple of other things besides act as a Rino:
- When you use the radio, it also sends - as part of the radio traffic - your radio ID (mine is Cymbaline), and your current position. Handy if one or more people has a rino and you want to see where everybody is at. - You can select a waypoint on your unit, and selet "Send waypoint". Any other Rino user in the area who is on the same frequency will receive a screen popup of that waypoint. Keeps you from having to hand-enter waypoints in a group. I've used this multiple times with ScottJ and amazingracer. Personally, I think there's something amiss with my 130's microphone. I need to send it in to garmin. The 110 was/is much better. P.S. Garmin *does* spell it "Rino" - Radio Integrated Navigation for the Outdoors" or something like that. |

I got your "dig" AG, and I would never be offended...unless you suggested I buy a Maggie!
Yep Jason, I've actually used the broadcast "position" feature at one of my events and a friend helping me had a 120 and was able to find me easily. I've never tried to send a waypoint. I've been using a PTT headset and I really like it much better than the built-in mic. on the 130 or 120. |
