Just an informational thread about a new geocache listing service.

OpenCaching

Open Cache has been live since August 18, 2010. It has similarities to other listing sites such as Geocaching.com and Terracaching.com.

Some differences:
-No sponsors are needed.
-Everything is free. No premium membership needed for some features.
-Virtual caches are allowed.
-Distance between caches is 300 feet.
-Cache rating system. Kind of useless in the sites infancy.
-Check out the site for more.

There are currently 2 open caches in Georgia. The first is a virtual on top of Stone Mountain and the other(mine) a traditional cache of the Silver Comet Trail in Hiram.

OpenCache's goal is NOT to replace geocaching.com but to add a alternative listing site.
Competition is a good thing as it will improve both(and other) sites. The market(meaning you and me) will decide.

Come on over and sign up(it's free) and join the discussion in the forums where there are way more knowledgeable people about the site and how it works, hang out.

Happy caching and see you out in the woods(definitely in Savannah next month)

David

Similarities??? Looks like they copied everything from geocaching.com after looking at it.

Close only counts in Horseshoes, hand-grenades and geocaching.

They aren't reinventing the wheel here. Just making some changes, mostly the ones people have been asking for years but have fallen on deaf ears for whatever reason.

I just cross posted my first one... there are none in the S. GA area yet. See how it goes and may put out a couple in the Savannah area. I like the fact that they allow virtuals.

Thanks for posting this info.

Get some out before the Going Coastal events next month and I'm sure a few of us will find them while down that way.

I'm a thought ahead of you Smile I plan on getting out at least a couple in Savannah, hopefully in the Skidaway area...or possibly near the interstate. Looking forward to the event.
