Hello all. I am new to Geocaching (getting my first GPSr for Christmas tomorrow), and I am looking for a "Geo-buddy" to help me set-up things and to help equip my self and family into the sport. And also to share thier experiences to help me avoid pitfalls I may encounter. I live in the Calhoun area. Thanks for reading. And have a very Merry Christmas (I am not PC, so no happy holidays)!! And a great New Year. Jeff

Welcome to geocaching!!!!

It's an addiction....and you haven't even started with geocoins yet....yikes!

I'm in Hiram and am a little over an hour away. I can help if no one closer answers the call.

BTW...what GPSr are you getting? Or did Santa not tell you that much Wink ?

Welcome to geocaching!

I hope you enjoy your new Christmas present you are getting. Smile

It is a great family activity.

Hopefully someone local will come along and offer to help you out and take you on a few caches.

Welcome to the adventures and explorations of/with geocaching. The GC site has most of the "geocaching 101's". Some of the foundations stones I've obtained for Geocaching were from attending a few of the GGA events. I hope your family enjoys your new GPS and where it will lead you to.

Welcome Jeff. Calhoun - that's up north if I recall. Should be plenty of folks around willing to show you the ropes. My advice is to pay close attention to the difficulty and terrain ratings on each cache, and start slowly to get the hang of it. You'll enjoy the game more as you figure stuff out and graduate to higher levels.
Merry Christmas.

Thanks For all of the kind replies. I opened my Christmas present this morning. Downloaded all my maps. And the next thing is to upload my queries into it. However, since the kids got me up at 6AM. I'm going back to bed. Will go on my first quest this afternoon! Logon to Geocaching.com to see how I suceeded! Thanks again, Jeff

Hi all. I got my Earthmate PN-30 all loaded with maps. However I am having problems getting my paperless Geocaching going. Does anyone out there have a DeLorme? Can I pick your brain for a second? Thanks again, Jeff

Go to the DeLorme website and download CacheRegister. It costs 10.00 and is well worth it. I think it's under "GPS Widgets." With CacheRegister you can load pocket queries into your PN-30 with full descriptions, hints, and logs.

If you are not a premium member (and so can't run pocket queries), you can click "Send to GPS" on each cache page, and it will send all the info to your GPSr. You have to download a free plug-in for it to work, but the website should prompt you on what to do.

Looks like you successfully found a couple of caches. Congratulations!

I found my first cache w/o knowing how to enter coords into the GPS receiver. That was way before you could download them from the website.

I drove around until the latitude was nearly the same as the cache's, turned 90° and drove until the longitude was close. Then got out and repeated the exercise on foot. When the lat and lon both matched what was on the printout the cache was at my feet. Wow!

Hope your first cache find was as exciting and satisfying.

Finally figured out the sequence of buttons to hit on my GPSr to bring up all of the info. Thanks for the help. Late nights and coffee helps!
