Refer to my post above. What were Lewis and Clark talking about when they mentioned the "Experiment"? -Sushi of the fisherKings ~~~~~~~~~~~~ AllenLacy Registered Geocacher (5/29/02 2:53:38 pm) okay..here's my trivia answer A collapsible iron-framed boat of Lewis' design. It was comprised of an iron frame which came apart in sections, over which was stretched a covering of hide. It did not work out as planned. When the expedition reached the Great Falls of the Missouri in July 1805, Lewis was unable to obtain suitable pitch with which to caulk the seams of the leather skins stretched over the framework. After spending nearly two weeks assembling and covering the boat, Lewis wrote on July 9, 1805: quote: Question posted at 2:39 answered at 2:53 Edited by: AllenLacy at: 5/29/02 3:02:45 pm ~~~~~~~~~~~~ the mtn man and puppymonster (5/29/02 3:04:28 pm) Re: okay..here's my trivia question Lewis devised a collapsible canoe in Harpers Ferry. It was comprised of an iron frame which came apart in sections, over which was stretched a covering of hide. He conducted a "full experiment" on the unusual canoe. To his satisfaction, he found the craft could carry a load of 1,770 pounds. Better yet, since the collapsible frame weighed just 99 pounds, he could transport the disassembled boat with relative ease. Lewis and Clark came to a point on their journey where they got to the Great Falls on the Missouri River. The big white boat they were in, too heavy to be portaged, was left behind as they came to a section of the river that had five falls where they thought there was only one waterfall. The portage would have been 18 miles. Anticipating this circumstance, Lewis had brought along the portable strap-iron framework for the collapsible boat that could be covered with animal hides and sealed with pine pitch. Unfortunately, there were no pine trees in the vicinity of the White Bear Islands below the Falls, and the improvised caulking of pounded charcoal and buffalo tallow didn't work. The boat sank; Lewis's "experiment" was a failure, and another five days were spent hewing two cottonwood dugouts to replace it. After digging several caches to conceal some excess baggage (worked caches in there too!), including specimens of the new plants Lewis had found along the Missouri, the Corps of Discovery got underway again.
