How did you get your trailname/nickname

I was just curious how people got some of thier trailnames? Such as Mtn Man, Bent Twigs, etc... Was it given to you cause of a characteristic, earning it, or you just picked one?

I guess I will start with mine.

Unfortunately I hate my true trailname - "Saltlick" because frankly, it sounds stupid to me. But I did earn it. About 1.5 years ago I hiked the first 30 miles of the AT. We prepared for months, even doing pre-hikes with full packs. We started at the approach trail in Amicalola and planned all day to hit Springer Mtn (8.8 miles away) - we ended up getting there at noon instead of 5 as we planned. I was exhausted after a previous mtn (Frosty Mtn.) so Springer really kicked the snot out of me. I did eventually make it to the top out of sheer will (I think we hiked the approach trail in 4-5 hours) and my hiking partner said "Oh my God look at your face! I wish I had a mirror so you could see this!"

Apparently the hike caused me to sweat so hard that my face was completely powder white from all the salt my body pushed out. (I could actually collect it and make a little pile in my hand....Eeeww) My hiking partner laughed so hard that he labeled me "Saltlick" for the rest of the trip.

Personally, I prefer "TwigEater" which I just made up and use occasionally. But I did earn the Saltlick trailname.

Re: How did you get your trailname/nickname

That is interesting...I know a child with Cystic Fibrosis that, as a result of the disease, produces salt when she sweats. If she plays outside for alittle while and then comes in, her hair looks like someone sprinkled salt in it.

Anyhow, I made my nick up the day I heard of Geocaching and signed up....I felt I needed a nickname involving *cache* and the first thing that popped to mind was "Locash" which is actually the name of a city from the movie CB4. It is supposed to be a take off on Compton. None of this has anything to do with Geocaching, but I tweaked it to LoCache and since I love that movie, I figured it was fine. I have ended up liking the name a lot and it is unique so it has stuck. In retrospect, I would probably have chosen Geotrex, but someone beat me to it.

Geo

* Straight outta LoCash, a crazy Mutha F***** named Gusto! *-----see the movie for the rest of the lyric...it isn't suitable for printing here! ;-) The movie, for those of you who don't know, is a rap version of Spinal Tap.

Re: How did you get your trailname/nickname

Back when I had time (what is that?) I used to play a lot of Ultima games on my PC. The main character is called Avatar. I kinda liked the sound of it and have used it as my name is several other role playing games I have played since then.

When it came time to choose a user nick for geocaching the first few choices I tried had already been taken so I tries "Avatar" and it took.

Since then I have placed a few caches - all named after locations in the Ultima world.

Re: How did you get your trailname/nickname

As you all know now, I have been hiking for some time. I have done a good bit of off-trail hiking and love to see how well I can read maps to see where I am. I like to explore those hard to reach out of the way areas, some of which are now off limits! (Hmm, a dot on the map... I wonder what was there!).

When I signed up with mindspring and got to pick some email accounts, I picked one with my real name. I also got a second one and hacked around with some "mtn" variations. I got the mtn-man address, and built one of my personal web sites around it. When I saw Geocaching, I registered the name quickly before I even found a cache so I could get it first. Someone beat me to mtnman on the EZBoard, so I put a space where the dash is.

As for a trail name... my two brothers and I were branded "The Tabasco Brothers" for the one thing that is always in our pack, and the Cajun ancestry.

you gotta be kiddin' me....

The very first cache I visited was Kennesaw Mtn. #2 on March 13, '01. Later that night I was creating a geocaching account so I could log my visit. When I got to the line that asks for a user name, I said to my GF, "What should my screen name be?" She blurted out, "How about bent_twigs??" I didn't give it a second thought, just finished filling out the form and then logged our visit. About a hundred caches and a couple o' months later I asked her how she came up with that name. Well..... it seems that it's the name of a retarded indian in this horrible "B" movie western starring Chris Farley.

Retarted Kid - LOL

OK, Bent Twigs, your story is 10X funnier than mine.
I'm in tears here at work reading the "retarded indian" comment.

LOL.

I assume that would be "Almost Heroes" with Jonathan Joss as Bent Twig.

Me, I just use versions of my real name.

Re: you gotta be kiddin' me....

Mine started as an alias to use when bidding for parts for my old Land-Rover on E-bay. The model of Landie that I have is knows as an "88" because it has an 88 inch wheelbase.
That's how I came up with "erik 88 L-R".

When it was time to create a logon for geocaching.com I just picked it w/o really thinking. I have trouble remembering all the user IDs, passwords, ATM codes, etc. that are forced on us, so it was easier to recycle one I can remember.

Re: How did you get your trailname/nickname

Mine's easy...

Much like Avatar, I use a name that I often used (use) when playing computer games. And, since my name is Bob anyway, this one fits pretty nicely. I've since used it for just about everything digital, including my domain (thatguybob.com). Don't bother visiting the website, since I haven't updated it since March, I think.

how I became Baby Gator

SaltLick and his friends took me to a UF football game. They dressed me all up in Gator stuff, orange, blue, tatoos, hat and stickers. Being a Hurricane fan this was a HUGE deal. Saltlick was proud of me for being a good lil' Gator and unknown to me, I said no, I'm a baby gator and it has stuck.

ErnieB aka Pointy_Head

I was born with it.

ErnieB

However, the one I most often use is Pointy_Head. This came about when I was in the military as an avionics technician. The primary tool we use is a phillips-head screwdriver to remove the instruments from the panels. Crew chiefs and other less lofty mechanics used a large flat-tipped screwdrivers from opening and closing panels. I had one supervisor who called all the avionics guys pointy heads and the others flat heads. The name stuck and I use Pointy_Head for all my aircraft discussion groups.

Trail name

As with others mine started as a result of player chess online. The band " YES " has a song about a chess game and one of the lines to the song is - Move on back two squares- Hence the name MOVEBACK

Automotive Hobby. Big block is a Rat motor, Small block is a Mouse Motor. Reeves Callaway referred to his Twin-Turbo Corvette as a "Sledgehammer" and so I twisted it into Sledgehamster and added the "P" to it after seeing Hampster Dance.com

Poprocz just sounded cool in the early days of chat rooms. I have used it ever since for every thing from e-bay to online gaming. Since Geocaching though, It has given me a great signature item, Pop rocks candy. As for momma and the kid, well they both hate it so we changed them to the crew. †
