Does anyone know a Gary Keeler involved in geocaching? We had a bomb scare out on Tybee and this guy gave a bonehead quote about how funny it was, and that it is just inevitable in "his" game, which is how we know it's someone involved in geocaching. A few locals are working with the Tybee police and local news reporters to try and make sure that this doesn't spin badly for us locally.

Thanks,
Kristin

I don't know the person in question.

I know which cache this was though. It did not belong to anyone with that name. The cache consisted of a cammotape covered PVC tube with the official geocaching sticker on it. The police responded to a concern about a pipe bomb, did not know what a geocache is, and destroyed the cache.
They then contacted geocaching.com to ask that the owner be asked to contact them, which was done.

Thanks for your efforts to educate the police and local news folks.

Hopefully the news does not run with that one guys comment and they listen to the other cachers.

Was the guys name Craig Keeler though? Were they the owners of the cache? Also the one news story I read had it all wrong they said the police blew up the virtual cache that is in the area. So it is a good thing that you are talking with the media and police to educate them.

The bomb scare was not that they found THE "Tybee Bomb" was it? They have still never found that one right??

Craig Keeler's name came up in an article that was posted in our Savannah Geocaching Yahoo group. I know the owner of the cache in question, and I know that's not his name.

Here's the article...

>> SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE FOUND
A suspicious package caused quite a disruption out at Tybee over
the weekend.
But the source was really just a game.
"They blew it up....hahahahaha."
Craig Keeler thinks it's funny that a piece in a high-tech game was
blown to pieces over the weekend.
"Well, it was bound to happen I guess," says Keeler.
Keeler is an electronic treasure hunter.
His game - geocaching.
"It's just exciting, it's like the thrill of finding things," adds
Keeler.
An adventure where people hide things - then others will go to the
Internet to find clues and directions - and use a hand-held GPS to
find the hidden treasure.
On Saturday police found one of those treasures under the Tybee pier,
but they weren't supposed to.
"This looked exactly like a pipe bomb, with the two end pieces
screwed on the end and everything," says Major Chris Case with Tybee
Police.
After about four hours - an explosion - and some detective work -
investigators now know - their find was part of a worldwide secret.
"It was a relief, knowing it wasn't actually a bomb," says Major
Case.
The cache found here under the Tybee pier was apparently just one of
hundreds hidden in this area.
Geocaching.com is the main hub for geocachers.
A search of the Tybee area - shows close to three hundred hidden
treasures nearby.
And detectives believe the "Tybrisa Walk on the Water" was the one
they destroyed on Saturday.
"It turned out this was a geocaching device that's been there almost
two years," adds Major Case.
A long time - especially since most of us didn't even know it
existed.
"You can be walking right over it, not find it because it's buried or
in a hallow tree, or under a bridge," adds Keeler.
But now it's a sure thing - there will be one less - geocache out
there for someone to stumble upon.
At least on Tybee.

PS, I have Googled Gary Keeler and can't find anyone who I could see having given this quote. Kelly Foster is a reporter with our local Fox station.

Obviously this is a "person" that has been invented by the press.....every geocacher knows that you do not "bury" caches....the reporter appears to have invented a person to enhance his story... that's my opinion and I sticking to it.
