Just curious which of my Georgia friends I'll see at the Mega event in Rock Hill, SC next month... http://www.geocaching.com/seek...51-90bf-46c8ca7daca4

I had planned to be there but it's not looking so good. Too much already planned for October! Team Underachievers - we log a lot of miles for a few smiles

I was planning to until I found out anyone caught selling coins would be asked to leave and escorted out. so I changed my mind. ----------------------- Quality Over Quantity!!! -----------------------

It said coin trading is allowed. No sales ... Why not trade a geocoin for 10 gold US dollar coins? (Leave the bills at home) and Nope - I'm not going.

Seeing that is my old stomping grounds and know just about everyone in YoGO and GCGC I think I might make an appearance at least for 1 day.

Maybe it won't be a MEGA Event. Only 398 had posted - so far - less than the 500 required. I'd rather Go Coastal.

I was under the impression it is already categorized as a MEGA event because it had to be bid on and by virtue of being the winning bid by Groundspeak it already was considered a MEGA event. I might be wrong though.

Winning bid???! You mean it's all about the money? (Like Jeep and Geico) I read that Mega Events aren't awarded until AFTER the event was held and attendees are verified. I could be mistaken, again.

According to the Groundspeak weekly newsletter it is already listed as a mega event (on the right hand side). Close only counts in Horseshoes, hand-grenades and geocaching. ~ltblarg

Last year's event, http://www.geocaching.com/seek...ails.aspx?wp=GC20TB6 GC20TB6, is a mega but it only had 327 attended logs. We're planning to go this year.

The MEGA event classification is based on persons attending, not geonicks attending. Many folks cache as teams, so one will attend log could result in two or three (or more) persons attending. For a recurring event to be first classified as a MEGA event, the number of signatures on the log determines whether or not it was a MEGA event and the icon is awarded after the fact. After the first MEGA, an event repeated annually such as GeoWoodstock and GeocoinFest is published as a MEGA event. Hopefully Going Coastal will hit MEGA status this year!

Thanks for clarifying that for everyone, Brad. Our hopes are high for Going Coastal ... arrgh! this year. Andi and I just got back from our last planning visit at Skidaway SP. All systems are go! Unfortunately, due to all the work before us, we will not be able to attend GeoCoin Fest this year, but we wish them the best of luck! Wow, I'm surprised how many people aren't going to such a large event about 4 hours away from Atlanta. As far as selling stuff there, that rule is in place (and has been since the original in 2007) for the actual main event because vendors pay a fee to vend. You can sell if you want to pay a table fee. I know many cachers who paid the $50 or whatever it is and shared a table so they could sell their collections/extra coins/coin designs. Based on my past experience at this event, however, there's plenty of places and times to sell off coins outside of that main event location, FWIW.

Not a money bid, a LOCATION bid. It's a paper proposal provided to the voting committee for what an area has to offer attendees as well as an outline of how an area meets the pre-established criteria for being a host location (proximity to major airports, places of interest, local caching group support, etc). Woodstock does the same thing, btw.
In addition to what Brad said... GeocoinFest has been in place since 2007. And that first event in Temecula, CA wasn't given the MEGA icon and status until AFTER the attendance was verified. All GeocoinFests since (Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, Minniapolis, and now Rock Hill) automatically have it because the event is ESTABLISHED as having the required attendance. 2012's bid proposals are from Las Vegas & Denver. The committee will be reviewing and voting between those two locations.

Ok I checked into this and there are no rooms left at the hotel and the website does not list any other nearby hotels. I have not searched for other hotels. I also was thinking that if the cost to sell was only like $50 I would have done it and sold off my collection, easier and quicker than doing it on eBay. The cost is like $200 for a table! I will look for another nearby hotel and probably reserve a room in case I feel up to making the drive.

I didn't know how much it was to sell. I know there were cheaper tables for individuals during the MN GCF. You could always ask Craig or Susan about that. They may be willing to work with non-company individuals who want to vend. I am actually surprised Going Coastal didn't approach the event group about having a table there. I mean the best way to get attendance is to promote it outside your little local events. Whoever ran that could have sold their coins and labeled them as a "fundraiser." Don't have to say who the fund raising is for.
