Roswell put in some new walking trails along the river near my house.

I found a cool spot along the river that I want to place a cache.
This spot is a mile or so from the parking area.

Since this a bit of a hike in an urban setting I think it will get hit infrequently.
I find that people don't mind hikes when they are planning on hikes, but hikes in local parks are tedious for the average cacher.

So my question is: what is the local thought on making power run trails?
If I put in three caches along this trail, well now, folks will be coming out of the hills to find them.

On the other hand, I am chewing up a nice area that other local cachers may like to contribute caches of their own.

So, do I load up the trail with my own power run, or do I just place the one and hope cachers will come, and more caches will follow?

IMHO, option 2. I'd walk two miles for a cache, no problem. If you've found "your" spot, let others find theirs. This leaves room for others' creativity, whereas you might just be placing breadcrumbs.

Actually I have a different opinion on this. I say if you are going to put well thought out traditionals that do minimal damage to an area then go for it. I found a pretty park and placed caches strategically through the park thinking I had blocked it off with 3 ammo cans and a waterproof micro container(because that was all that corner could sustain). And then some joker came in and dropped micros in the woods where traditionals could be sustained nicely.

Plus if the park is close to your house, you are more likely to do maintenance on the caches as opposed to those who just have the urge to just throw out place a cache because A. they can and B. they happen to be there.

I say nip the frenzy in the bud and put out some nice quality caches that you can be proud of...

You found it first... go for it.

there used to be a couple of guys who complained all the time that all the cool places and parks had all been already gobbled up, but every couple of days new caches would come out placed in new and exciting places. Heck I found Williams Mill because I investigated some web sites and country roads. Those people who can't seem to locate a spot on their own and have to be led to an area to place their caches... aren't very creative.

I like the idea. HOWEVER, I think that there may be a problem. I suggested doing one a couple of years back and Erik said that they were not allowed by Geocaching (suggested a multi, which I didn't like). That may have changed by now.

There was a very nice one in California that I did (had about 9 caches over a 4-mile hike in a hilly canyon area). A few months later they were all archived.

Enter Erik.... 1 ... 2 .... 3

Definition of a Power Run: A route where caches are placed every 1/10th of a mile to help rack up numbers for the power cachers. They tend to be micros and are placed as close to the 528' mark so that more caches can be squeezed in along the stretch. They are usually (but not always!) placed without a care as to the area and frequently are found near dumpsters (yuck!) and other less then optimum places. A lot of times they are placed in areas that I do not want to be (much less my wife and kids) in after dark.

3 caches along a mile or more hike in a pretty park does not a power run make. But if you are truly worried, get a couple friends to help you place caches and each one of you place one and then everybody can watch each others cache and help out with the maintenance if needed. You can all feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in bringing other cachers to this area and still keeping a minimal impact upon the natural areas of it with well thought out and placed caches.

Just my $.02 and if you place them I'll come find them Wink,

Thanks for the replies.

I think Power run was the wrong term based on KVOM's definition. I would not put out a bunch of quickies or bread crumbs just to lead to the good one. All the hides will be unique and quality hides. I do take some pride in my caches.

I think I will put out two caches. This way I can ensure they are quality caches, and do not fall into the power run category.

After a couple of months, if nobody else has joined in, and it feels like the area can support more caches I will add some then.

Thanks all.
