Replicated from the GGA EZBoard:
Johnnielacy Registered Geocacher (10/31/01 3:49:37 pm) top 10 list Most of us know who has visited the most caches in Georgia. I visited one today that put me to thinking. It was one Kennesaw Mountain by Mtn-Man. It has had more than 40 visitors. I wonder if that is the top number in the state. I wish there was a top 10 list of the caches with the most visits and a list of hiders with the most visits to their caches. Am I the only one that mind goes off wondering this way? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ lmoseley BigDog (10/31/01 4:53:20 pm) Re: top 10 list I think it would be nice to have the geocaching.com database for statistical analysis, but Jeremy isn't about to give it up. Someone who cared enough could recreate the database by something as simple as cycling through the on-line cache pages, incrementing the cache number one by one, and using some sort of script to process the resulting pages. If all you cared about was the placers info, you'd just have to process the database once and then pick up the new additions. The Buxley site must do something like that now. It would also be nice to be able to download the waypoint info for multiple sites to the GPS... However, you you wanted to track seekers, you'd have to re-spider the database every week or so to update the seeker info... and that might put too much load on their servers, especially if EVERYONE starts doing it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AJLacy Super Poster (10/31/01 7:33:34 pm) Re: top 10 list Moun10Bike stats page www.switchbacks.com/geocaching2.html use to show individual's statistics, but he quit. I suspect it got where it put too big a load on the server running www.geocaching.com. It can be done, a couple of weeks ago I wrote a program to connect in to www.geocaching.com, sign on as me, then use the zipcode seek pages to list caches I haven't visit and reformat them for downloading to my palm. http://www.allenlacy.com/GPS/UnvisitedCaches.htm But I only do it once a week, and only for the caches near me to avoid putting a large load on Jeremy's computer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ erik88l r Administrator (10/31/01 9:02:37 pm) Re: top 10 list For some reason many who find a cache and log the find in the log book don't bother to do so at www.geocaching.com. That makes it difficult to do any sort of comparison between caches. I suspect that Jim Gooch's Beaver Cache at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=29 probably has more visits than most all others, since it's been there so long (the 29th cache placed). To have a lot of visits they have to be there a long time and be very accessable. For what it's worth the caches that I find most memorable are not those that are visited often - finding them involve a long hike, or they're on an island somewhere, so few people visit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AJLacy Super Poster (11/1/01 9:01:13 am) Re: top 10 list A new unannouced feature at geocaching.com, when at a cache page, when you look below the cache description there has been a place "other caches hidden by this person". Well now it also says "caches FOUND by this person". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ lmoseley BigDog (11/1/01 9:35:44 am) Re: top 10 list That IS an interesting new feature! One anomality is that it shows the date the caches you found were hidden, rather than the date you found them... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Johnnielacy Registered Geocacher (11/1/01 9:50:31 am) Re: top 10 list I pick and choose the caches that I go to. I too like the one that has a good hike to them. I have been to most of the one in North Georgia that has a long hike. But I get the most enjoyment from the caches that are at an interesting places that I would not have found other wise. Rock Town http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=118 is one that comes to mind. The cache got me there, but it was a most enjoyable place to visit. A very easy one mile hike to a mostly unknown place. There are lots of other places that I have found by cache hunting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AJLacy Unregistered User (11/1/01 10:21:05 am) Re: top 10 list quote:I don't think it is anomality as much as an unexpected "feature". What Jeremy is doing is using the same program he uses for all seeks but this by passing the a user ID it only show caches found by a specific person. That is www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?state_id=11 selects caches in georgia www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?zip=30076 selects caches close to zipcode 30076 www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?u=BigDoggie select caches hidden by BigDoggie www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?ul=BigDoggie selects caches which were found by BigDoggie. Using this URL I don't have to find a cache hidden to get the list of found caches. Anyway the resulting pages of all these searches are laid out the same, and the dates shown are the hide date and last found date. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ramness570 Registered Geocacher (11/2/01 3:41:27 am) Re: top 10 list last time I cehcked my "yellow river stash" I counted the logbook entries and as i recall there were 46 but 36 logs on the cache page. |
