Yeah, wap.geocaching.com has been sort of clunky to use. It was something, but not much beyond something. The iPhone app has been really nice to watch develop and I am glad they now have started working on the Android app. It is still sort of rough, but it is wild to cache without a GPS.

+1 on the iPhone app! I still always bring the handheld Garmin though to seal the deal.

Interesting that "UV Light Required" is common enough that they added an attribute for it.

"UV Light Required" ... hmmm. The black light just lit up over my head. I've got an idea for a new mystery cache. Wink

do I need to go to a head shop for my caching supplies now! I'm afraid I just sit at home and eat fritos if I do.

Nah, not that kind of "magical mystery tour". More like an invisible ink night cache. Although that would be a good name for it. Idea

Go to Home Depot for your black light needs - much safer than the head shop. Cool 4

I love Verizon, but they are so ANAL about third party apps. Both BlackBerry models I have had, Verizon will not allow third party access to the GPS so I can't use the Trimble App. I have no idea why Verizon only allows this on certain models.

I'm new, so alot of the things I read and learn make sense, but some don't. All the new "attributes" - couldn't most of them ( poisonous plants, ticks, abandoned building etc.) just be put in the cache description? Seems like maybe they were looking for attributes so they could make more buttons. Smile LOL ?

Yeah, I hated the Verizon/Blackberry/GPS thing. Things are opened up with the Android phones though. Verizon knows they cannot lock those down. If they did allow access to the GPS, I could have easily found my Blackberry when I lost it. I even called customer service and they said they could not help me. I have an app on my Droid that will give my phone's location via the web.

People ask for the attributes so they can do pocket queries based on some of those attributes, or to remove them from their queries to avoid them.

Plus using a computer that has a GPS chip as well as phone chips isn't exactly caching without a GPS, Johnnie lots of times, and me some of the time are not using anything with a GPS chip in it.

I have a single app (Tasker) on mine that let me set up all kinds of triggers.

I have it set
1. When I get close to home it turns on my wifi connection, then when I leave home it turns wifi off.
2. When I get to work it turns off the ringer and turns on vibrate. When I leave it puts the ringer and vibrate back to the way they were when I got to work.
3. When power gets below 30% it turns GPS off, turns wifi off, lowers the screen brightness, to save the battery for phone calls. If I plug it in to the charge, it puts everything back the way it was.
4. When I plug it in, it makes sure wifi is on, and turns on auto sync so that updates can be done during the night.
5. When it gets a SMS message with a special sequence of characters, it turns on GPS waits 60 seconds then sends an SMS message to the requesting phone with the GPS coords and battery level. Then it causes the phone to beep. Finally it turns off the GPS.

I plan to add another task which when a SMS message comes in with a different set of characters it does all the above then displays "This phone is lost or stolen, call "xxx-xxx-xxxx" to arrange to return it.

All this in one app, it is really cool. Tasker is very powerful but not it isn't a simple process to set up all these "tasks". But I don't think there is a single iPhone app which can be set to do all of the above.

Now that's cool!! I especially like the one that sends GPS coords back to the requesting phone. I'll have to see if there's an iPhone app that'll do that...
