GA Historical Markers

I recently created the GA Historical Markers Cache (GC4166). I also contacted the guy in charge at UGA's Carl Vinson Institute of Govt with the proposal of the cache and how it would help him out with his documentation. He's very interested in the idea of the documentation of the markers that can occur from geocaching. He's also the chair of the Governor's Commission on Georgia History and Historical Tourism. So, not sure if this might prove beneficial for us later on down the road with the State Parks people or not if we help him out. I know I'll be taking a lot of pictures of the markers since it seems that I pass them all the time now on hunts.

Here's a blurb from the email I received back:
"In addition to maintaining the historical markers website, I chair the Governor's Commission on Georgia History and Historical Tourism (an agency created by the General Assembly in 2001). One of my objectives is to promote historical tourism as a tool of economic development for rural Georgia. One strategy is to compile a county-by-county list of historical markers, monuments, cemeteries, courthouses, significant structures, and other historical sites and make this available online and in printed format. A related strategy is to use GIS maps to locate markers and other items of historical interest on maps so that someone driving between two locations could go online and see alternative routes and the historical sites they would see along each route. A third strategy is to locate historical markers and other items of interest within two miles of each Interstate highway in order to get motorists traveling through the state to know what they can see with a quick detour. In all of these cases, GPS coordinates would be invaluable."

Re: GA Historical Markers

I agree with Snake. This is easier than the benchmark caches and provides faster results! (and there is no trespassing involved!)

Re: GA Historical Markers

The thing that I like about this one is that Geocachers would actually be assisting in providing a historical record for the State of Georgia. I know exactly where many of these are in Cobb County. I had seen the other cache, but it seemed like just too easy of a drive-by cache so I did not fool with it. At least this one helps accomplish a goal. Very interesting idea for a cache.

Re: GA Historical Markers

Yeah, I don't think I would have created the cache if I hadn't found CVIOG's website and their need of documentation of the markers. It would have been too easy for us Georgians to log this one as a find since we have so many of them. Only Texas(11000) and New York(2800) have more than our state. I just thought of it as a way to help others out while we're doing what we love since I am seeing so many of them now.
