"Joy of Snakes"

We just saw a great show on GPTV that was about identifying the various snakes found in Georgia. It was really good...gave ways to I.D. each one, and how to tell poisonous from non-poisonous ( not that it matters which to some people.) Talked about the various areas some snakes like to hide..some of them looked like prime cache hiding spots! Lots on their behavior and habitat.

It is called "Joy of Snakes" and is on again August 24 at 10:00 pm on GPTV. The guy in it is Okefenokee Joe, a real character. We highly recommend it to everyone spending time outdoors ..and sticking their hand behind old logs and stuff! Enjoy!

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

Perhaps someone could video-tape it for the club library... so we could view it on our schedules...

Volunteers?

Here's another fun way to learn about our reptilian friends:

The Georgia Herpetological Society will have a snake demo at Panola Park Saturday the 25th at 2pm at Panola Mountain Park for those of us who can't wait for them to join one of our GGA meetings.

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

Just an update - I got a confirmation from Stephanie Palmer of the Ga. Herpetological Society that she will be at our Sept. meeting at about 2:30. She'll put on a program about Georgia snakes that we might encounter in the woods. She indicated that she'd have a copperhead and a timber rattler along with the less dangerous critters.
I believe JustDrivin and Navigirl will do their First Aid demo right after the snake demo - hopefully not demoing treatment of small puncture wounds......

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

Erik, I am confused about the timing... she will be there at 2:30, but the meeting doesn't start until 3:00 and will start with the business session???

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

Lewis,
I had invited these folks on Aug. 25th before we formalized our meeting structure. We can discuss this off-line if you like, but I didn't infer that a specific schedule had been set, other than to conduct business at either the beginning or end of the meeting. With a 1:00 time also posted on the site I suggest those who want to discuss business come early and get it out of the way while eating lunch. It appears that with snakes, a map reading demo by mtn-man, and first-aid by justdrivin we have a pretty full plate of fun & games for this session!

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

Erik and Lewis,
I thought I heard that the "snake-lady" may take 1 to 1.5 hours. With Mtn. Man and myself making a presentation, we may be looking at a long afternoon. I planned on keeping mine to about 10-15 minutes. If needed, I can do mine in October..whatever works best. Don't want those attention spans wandering! Let me know if we need to change things.

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

If we're voting, I say 10 minutes with the snakes, put them back in the truck and on with the show! You will recognize me by the fact that I'll be the one in the back of the pavillion, with my running shoes tightly laced.

As you can tell, I don't like spiders and snakes. Hey, that would make a great song wouldn't it?

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

Ernie, you and LoCache may have to fight for that spot farthest to the rear. 'And all this after I promised the snake handlers that each one of us would want to adopt a baby.
Just kidding, really!!!

I have asked her to trim the length of the presentation and to not start until 3:30 to avoid conflicts. I haven't had a reply to that request but assume it'll be ok.

If you don't like snakes what about alligators? They are SO cute when they're babies......

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

You mean the snake handlers are going to pass out free samples? Fantastic! I've always wanted a snake. smile

Re: "Joy of Snakes"

I don't do them either! I even stay out of the expensive shoe isle at the malls.

BTW, did you know that an aligator doesn't have a great deal of strength to open its mouth, all its power is in closing, so if you seen one with it jaws shut, whip out the duct tape!
