Just wondering, How far are people willing to travel to go GeoCaching? With two young kids( 3 1/2 years and a 11 month old) We have been sticking close to home.(30 miles Macon/ warner robins area) We have hid the second cache in our town, and have had seven finds on it so far.

When I first started cachin' I would just travel to the closest to me. Up here in the mountains, that distance can vary, depending on which winding road you travel. If there is a good cache around that appeals to me it doesn't matter how far it is. Last weekend, I drove 300 miles (roundtrip and full tank of gas) to get to Redwine Cove cache. Just had to do the 4x4 thing. And I always plan cachin' sidetrips when I travel. I scope 'em out beforehand and will even alter my normal route to get at 'em. So far, there are still plenty of caches up here for me to do without going into Atlanta too much. We plan to do some that are about 30 miles from Helen, GA. We will be up there for vacation, and plan to drop off a few TB's that say they need to get to TN. We find it hard to go real far with the girl with us.

Since Ive done the 40 caches that are 30 miles from my house I drive to ATl at lesast once amonth to caching (for the GGA mtgns) and occasionally make atrip just for caching. The farthest a drove for caching so far has been helen for the GGA Jaunt. I would call myslef the "Clayjar" of the state because Im the one that tends to drive the most for caches. Bc us Maconites arent luckily enough to have the fast amnt of caches like you ATL guys. I'm pretty lucky in that I travel for business some. I like to find caches in the places I travel to. Recently I took an early flight to Minneapolis and got in the rental car and drove 120 miles down to Iowa to get a few caches. One of them was a virtual in the exact location where the plane Buddy Holly was in crashed in the cornfields. It took me about 180 miles to get back because I went to Rochester, MN for some work and then drove back to Minneapolis. In that same trip on the last day I went to Wisconsin and did a few caches as well, though it was only about 15 miles from where I was working. I really wanted to do a cache by The Lil Otter, one of the top 10 cachers in the country. On our recent short vacation to Denver we drove about 100 miles up to Wyoming to grab two caches in Cheyenne and then drove back. You have to love the unlimited mileage thing on rental cars! One of the main reasons we went to CO at that time was to go to the CO Area Cache Hunting Enthusiast (CACHE) event cache meeting. We had a blast and then spent the next day around Col. Springs and up at Pikes Peak. As Amazingracer said, I'm not as much of a traveller as Clayjar from Louisiana. He will be at our event cache this weekend. He has just completed a quest to visit the last few of the 48 continental US states. I actually think he is stalking me since he keeps showing up at meetings I attend!

Well there are many aspects of cache hunting that appeal to me. The more of them that a cache has, the longer the distance I am willing to drive to hunt it. Of course I tend to hunt others on the route as well. The longest drive for a cache hunt so far is about 350 miles (round trip). A related question is how long a distance are you willing to go on foot to find caches? The Lacy’s once did about 10 miles to find 3 caches on a rough terrain, and 6 miles to get one cache on the AT. Heck we hiked 6 miles in and out to hide a cache, and that was after a 50 mile (100 mile total) drive.

Allen makes a good point regarding driving distance and foot distance. My longest hike was either 2+ miles each way for this one, or it was the the loop that Erik's Invisible cache takes you on. I've completed DaRebel's Revenge, which is a two stage multi with 100 miles between the stages. I did the first stage on the day of the last GGA meeting since it was kinda close by, and I did the final stage the next day and found some caches in the area along the way. No one else has gone after this one yet, so it's obvious that I'm an extreme case. The longest drive I have done would be for this series of four related caches: Upstate Ramble Sandhills Slog Carolina Gold The Big Kahuna I teamed up with some other Geocachers and we completed this as a group over 6 weeks. Needless to say, we combined the excursions with trips to Charleston and visits to many other caches along the route. Still, this is an extreme position. Something I haven't done, and which falls into the ridiculous category, is Caleb's tag team ammo can. This is a three stage multi, the first and final stage is in Huntsville Alabama and the second stage is around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. While this cache is designed to be done as a tag team effort, there are some folks who have found all parts singlehandedly. I drive this route about once a year, I may give it a go next time.

Where will you be when you come? You said around 30 miles from Helen. We try to make caching a family event, short 1/2 to 3/4 mile each way with our children who are 6,4,and almost 2 years old. I could offer some local suggestions for family friendly non-urban caching.

We will be Helen, we go every year. We have downloaded all that are in 30 miles of Helen, and hope to hit them all, seeing as we will be there a week. Any suggestions would be helpful.

When will you be in Helen? I'm just 8 miles away and could give pointers on most of the caches around here. "Give to a pig when it grunts and a child when it cries, and you'll have a fine pig and a bad child." -Proverb

I'm probably going to be doing several in the area of the Nashville airport next week. Have to go pick up a friend up there at the airport, and I figure why not kill the extra time I'll have to visit some caches? Hopefully it'll not be too hard...
