When I first started caching, I had a honking 3 ring binder with all the cache pages printed out. Then I tried paperless Caching. But after a scarey experience I went back to Print-outs. A few years later - after finally figuring out what was easiest for me and new improved paperless options... I am back to paperless. So this week the question will pertian to Paperless Caching. Please feel free to leave comments on programs, gadgets, ect that you use. ----------------------- Quality Over Quantity!!! -----------------------

I actually use two of the options. I use a smart phone if I need to look at the log and the description, but I primarily use my GPS which has the cache type, terrain/difficulty, last four finds (found or not found) and the hint. I upload the data into my GPS using GSAK and Garmin POI loader. I gave Shilo a little tutorial this past weekend since we both use Garmins. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Lakebum,

I started out with a 3 ring binder too! It's gathering dust now though. These days I use a combination of these to get the job done: GSAK
Garmin POI loader
Mapsource
Nuvi 750
iPhone with GC app
Garmin GPSmap 60CSx

I use a PalmTX to store my cache information on and my GPS MAP 76CSx to cache with. When I'm caching with BlueEagle23 I have the use of his information live via the internet. I just got a Nuvi to get me to the caches in my geomobile and I'm still playing around with it tweaking it the way I want. I have some questions for you Lakebum on the POI loaded information, offline of course-)

I am on my 3rd palm pilot, man are they cheap on ebay these days, I might stock up. My sweetie has a colorado so she can go paperless so much easier than me. The problem with the palm pilot is most windows 7 machines are 64 bit and Palm didn't make a driver to sync it through the cord. I'm using a infrared Dongle and it's working pretty good. LZ keeps telling me to go "Oregon", but my bank account keeps saying no! Plus how do you use the touchscreen as a clip board to sign those micros!

I'm using WIN7 and can use my PDA cord to HotSync my TX. Don't ask me how I did it

Not to hijack the thread but here is what I found and did. "Information about Windows 7 and 64-bit editions of Windows: * Windows 7: Many users have successfully installed and run Palm Desktop 6.2 software with Windows 7. Palm has not done thorough testing with a range of third-party equipment running Windows 7, therefore Palm cannot guarantee compatibility." I guess I was one of 'many' who got lucky. Hopefully you will be too biker64 unless the wireless dongle is working well for you. Edit to add: Check out this link and go about half way down to download Desktop 6.2. Good luck!!

I started out with printouts then went to a PALM with CacheMate after running everything thru GSAK. Now days I use a Nuvi 205W and a DeLorme PN-40, still using GSAK to manipulate things to my liking.

I started with printouts until I got my first Palm Pilot. I managed to sit on that one and break the screen, got a second, then an iPhone. It seemed redundant to carry the Palm since I could download pocket queries into the Geocaching ap on the iPhone, but it has frustrated me lately to be in the woods and have the iPhone let me down because I forgot to download the PQ before it expired and/or poor reception prevented me pulling up the nearby cache in the application. I may go back to the Palm if I can remember how to work it. ~erik~

| It's about the journey |
Before the 60csx I would choose the caches on line and carry the palm and at times take paper, GPS, camera, and a phone. When the 60 came out I used GSAK to put some of the cache info in the notes field and sometimes carried the palm, took the camera, and phone. When the Colorado came along I carried the GPS, camera and phone. Now I'm going through a transition, I cache in town with my phone, or out of town with my Oregon. I'm finding that's it's convenient for me to drive to the location with the Oregon and then find the cache with my phone, log it online at the cache location after I sign the log and rehide the cache.

I started with paper and a Garmin GPS III late in 2002. The 2nd phase was a Palm Pilot Professional and Garmin GPS V. That was followed by the Palm Pilot III and Garmin eTrex Legend HCx. The current solution is the iPhone with Geocaching app and a combination of the eTrex HCX and Garmin GPmap 60Cx. The pocket query data is filtered in GSAK, sent to MapSource for "shaping" and "sizing", and then sent to the GPSrs. My Garmin map data currently comes from this site. Go Jackets!

I started with printouts, then I got a composition notebook and would just write down the size, diff, terrain, and any hints. I would also work out any puzzles in the book. Then I went with an old Palm III off Ebay. When my 60csx got stolen, I upgraded to a Oregon 450. Now everything is in it. I just run my PQ, drag the file to the Oregon, and hit the road. The only time I print or bring paper is for those crazy puzzles.

I actually started paperless caching with a Handspring PDA. Used it up until probably about a year ago. Then I started using the Iphone & the gc.com app. Since I don't use a data plan and I do all the geo stuff using wiFi, it took a while for me to get the hang of it. But now I run a query, snag it with the iphone and hit the trail. Much easier than the way it used to be. Using a PDA, I found that you only need to buy 2 pieces of software - cachemate and GSAK. And that's it. The old way of spinning and fizzy and email to a Lacy and then upload and reload... and all that gobble-de-gook rig-a-ma-roll made me go back to paper. But once I figured out the easy way, it was smooth sailing (or hiking). ----------------------- Quality Over Quantity!!! -----------------------
