I've been planning on finding some caches in the Rich Mountain WMA (Cold Cache, the Short Bus, Aaron Mtn, Solaros Cache, etc). I know that the road is closed except during certain hunting seasons (I know for certain it opens around November). I was wondering if anyone knew if it opens during Turkey season (end of March through May). I've tried finding a number to call for the road closure, but all the ones I find are disconnected now. Thanks for any help and have fun caching. Smile

I thought that the roads into Rich Mtn from the north had been improved and stayed open all year. It used to go all the way through to a SW entrance which I think is still there but it was cut in two a couple of years ago because the offroaders were having too good of a time there and they had to put a stop to that, now didn't they.
These days two FS service roads go into RMWA, 295 & 338, both off of Rock Creek Road. Both were supposedly seasonal designation, open 10/19 - 10/21 and 11/22 - 11/25 in 2007.

Thanks for the info. I had noticed the dates for 2007, but was hoping they might open it up more in 2008. Since it was open for deer season last year, I thought they might open it up for turkey season this year. Oh well, I'll just have to make it a nice long hike or wait until the Fall. Either way I'm definately wanting to find these caches Smile.

I don't think they will open the road until fall but there is a phone number under the dates. The hike was worth it for me. Those all are great caches.

I rode a bicycle the last time I was there. Well, actually I pushed that darn bike much of the way in, but it sure made it quick outa there as the bike coasted most of the way. Smile

I just hid the bike in the woods near the trailhead as I hunted the cache I'd come for. It was a lot of fun. I even saw a mother feral hog with a whole bunch of little piggies running behind her.

I wonder if that was the same Hog that ate Johnnie's GPS? Did she seem Like she knew where she was going?
